Grounded, Art Piece Gallery Mullumbimby. Opening 27th August 6pm.
After the tactile nature of our textile and paper shows, we’re revisiting painting, this time with “GROUNDED” a show which seeks to address the landscape in original visual language.
Can anything new really be said or shown about landscape? Artist and critic, Jeff Makin thinks that “Gabrielle Jones does have something different to say about the landscape…Jones’ tone [creates]…a particularly ethereal quality, and a landscape for contemplation”. As well as Gabrielle, we are also pleased to show the bold play on light and shade in Michael Muir’s paintings (courtesy of Eva Breuer Gallery, Sydney). Michael has just been shortlisted for the $15,000 Sunshine Coast Art Prize to be announced on 26 August.
They are joined by Amanda van Gils’ paintings of the landscape as seen from a speeding train – intense and unnerving images – and by the enormous and forbidding painting of the rocks at Wategos Beach by Jan Rae, a brave and powerful departure on her part.
Charly Wrencher’s paintings are bright and uplifting, in celebratory homage to the magnificence of the nature right outside his studio door. They sit in contrast to the quiet, moody, purple hued landscapes of Aesha Kennedy’s paintings as she captures the last days of the hills on Left Bank Road, before they are sliced and carved and churned up in preparation for 220 new homes.
Groundbreaking? Perhaps….
But in any case, these paintings and the others from Rodney Black, Tanya Hoddinott, David Kas, Darren Porter and John Turton on show in “GROUNDED” will make you glad you live on planet earth.
I look forward to seeing you all at 6.00 pm Friday 27th August
with best wishes
